The World’s Most Beloved Sporting Events

October 15, 2020

Sports play an important role in our lives. Children practice sports to develop their motor skills, burn their energy, and stay healthy. For adults, sports can mean anything, from hobby to profession. Sporting heroes play role models, while others even turn sports into a lucrative side gig, thanks to their sports betting skills, even more popularly when free bets are offered. But if you were to pick a sport to follow, which would it be? If you’re wondering which are the world’s most beloved sporting events – and consequently the most beloved sports – check them out below.

1. The World Cup – Football

Football – or soccer, how our American friends might refer to it – is undeniably the most beloved sport around the world. Proof to this claim stands the World Cup, a sporting event followed by over three billions of supporters around the globe. This sport is incredibly popular in Europe, America, South Africa, as well as Asia.

2. Cricket World Cup – Cricket

Right after football, cricket impresses with a fan base of over two and a half billion enthusiasts. The greatest sporting event is the Cricket World Cup, that gathers fans and players from all continents. Not as spread as football, cricket is most popular in the UK, India, Asia, and Pakistan. Very similar to it, baseball is another bat-and-ball game mostly enjoyed in Canada and the USA.

3. Basketball World Cup – Basketball

Another World Cup topping the charts around the world is the Basketball World Cup. This sport follows right after cricket, with a whopping 2.2 billion fans around the world. Names such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant not only encompass the essence of this sport but have also inspired generations of youngsters. Basketball is most prominent in the USA and China, but also in some European countries and Argentina.

4. Wimbledon – Tennis

Tennis may not have as many fans as football or cricket, but it still reaches the hearts of over 1 billion people around the world. Like horse racing, tennis is mostly popular in Europe and the USA, although it also has its fair share of supporters in Australia, New Zealand, as well as some countries in Asia and the Middle East. Undeniably, the most beloved sporting event in the history of tennis is the Wimbledon, closely followed by the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open. Mostly relevant in the summer season, it often sees fans travelling across continents to attend all of the four major events.

5. Hockey World Cup – Hockey

Those who don’t follow this sport close enough may automatically think of ice hockey, the kind you play on a skating rink. The rest know, however, that the Hockey World Cup is one of the most beloved sporting events and that it happens on grass. Indeed, hockey is divided into field and ice kinds. Both sports share similarities, but the fan base is clearly divided. Some follow field hockey, while others – mostly Canadians – will prefer ice. Between the two, this sport appeals to over two billion supporters from the US, Canada, England, India, and a few other European countries.
