3 Home Renovations Worth the Money

March 7, 2021

Renovating your home is a common activity in the United States and all around the world. Homeowners everywhere are constantly seeking to reimagine their home’s space in order to better fit with their current needs. The truth is that a young family has totally different requirements for their home than one with older children or a couple that has just dropped their last child off at college.

Homeowners simply need to consider changes to their layout and usage of the home almost as often as their children need new shoes. But selecting the right places to focus on can be daunting for those who are new homeowners or haven’t yet learned to leverage their mortgage for financing home renovation process. Borrowers are sometimes wary of additional costs, but home maintenance and home improvements are just one part of the experience. There’s no getting around it. With these three renovations, you can be sure you’re getting your money’s worth and creating the comfort that you need and deserve in your home.

1. Add an Extension

Adding space to your home is a great way to reinvent the entire energy of the house and bring in a fresh area to relax or spread out a cramped room. Homeowners are finding in the current climate of coronavirus lockdowns and safety precautions that home working is both a blessing and a curse. While the opportunity to spend more time at home with loved ones is a great gift, the clutter that has transformed your kitchen table into an office desk (or possibly two plus a classroom) can introduce an element of chaos into your home that wasn’t there before.

An extension is the best way to take a chunk of yard space and transform it into a new room. You can use it as an office in the months ahead and reinvent the space as a guest room, home theater, or new bedroom for one of the kids as the workday returns to a more traditional setup. In order to tackle a project like this, it’s often a good idea to compare construction loans. These can be done as a refinancing of your original mortgage, or as a standalone construction loan that gets builders moving on your property quickly and without a monstrous interest rate — like you might see if you chose to finance the project on a credit card (rely on the types of loans available to homeowners with equity built by their mortgage instead of credit cards with high-interest rates).

2. Replace Aging Windows

For those in Michigan, hiring a Grand Rapids window contractor to install new panes or complete frames that will replace old windows in your home is a great way to immediately improve the quality of life you enjoy in your home. Your windows are one of the leading culprits of heat loss during the winter, and create an additional strain on your air conditioning system and energy bill as a result. As your windows get older they begin to lose their seal and ability to hold in the conditioned air. This leads to increased transfer of interior and exterior air temperature that can really wreak havoc on your home’s bills and comfort. A replacement is a smart move for anyone seeing an uptick in heating or cooling costs or a fluctuation in temperature and comfort in the home.

3. Consider your outdoor space.

The patio or porch area of your home is a great space to take advantage of the summer or spring weather, no matter where you live. Improving the outdoor elements of your home will give you extended comfort and more space to enjoy the changing seasons with the ones you love. A patio that’s been done up is a great place to host parties or family get-togethers. As the tide turns against Covid-19 and vaccinations continue to make gathering safer for us all, this will be a welcome addition to any home.

Take advantage of the services of pro builders and installers, and the variety of construction loan options available to you and update your home now.
