So, you finally decided to make the jump and try your hand at painting a room yourself. Painting, though relatively simple, is an important job, and you need to have the right equipment on hand if you want to get the results you desire. However, it can be difficult to know what’s essential when getting started. But with the proper set of tools, you can tackle pretty much any paint job in the house. Here are some essential pieces of equipment you need.
Floor Protection
The first thing you should do is start searching for heavy duty floor protection. You will need canvas cloths and surface protection board. Canvas cloths are a good option for carpet floors since they’re easy to install and will stay in place. But with hardwood floors, you’ll absolutely need some boards and high-quality tape.
Trimaco’s X board is the perfect solution and is easy to roll out on virtually all surfaces. It is breathable and water resistant, which will prevent paint, dirt or sludge from leaking. You can secure them using Trimaco heavy duty tapes. These are some of the most resistant you’ll ever find and are easy to use.
Roller and Brushes
Rollers are essential if you need to cover a large area. The shorter the nap, the smoother the results. If you’re going with latex paint, then a synthetic roller is best. But if you’re going to use oil paint, it’s better to go for something like wool.
As far as brushes go, you’ll need one angled brush and one flat brush. Flat brushes are used for large, even spaces, while the angled brush will make it easier to paint trim. Again, use natural fibers for oil paint, and synthetic for latex.
A Good Paint Tray
If you’re using rollers, then you can’t do without a tray. Get one sturdy metal or plastic tray, and use different plastic inserts for different colors. If you need more capacity, you can check out this tray. It can hold up to one gallon of paint and has a nice magnetic brush holder as well.
All in One Paint Tool
You don’t have to invest in all sorts of tools to get the job done. There are plenty of all-in-one tools that will allow you to scrape surfaces, apply putty, remove nails, and clean cracks. These tools will usually have a tool to remove lids on cans of paint as well. Most will also have a curved area that you can use to remove excess paint on your rollers.
Edger
An edger is perfect if you only need to paint small surfaces. And the best thing is that they allow you to paint without using tape. If you need to paint things like window molding for instance, a good edger is all you need.
All these tools are all that you need for a perfect paint job. While you can always start looking at more advanced equipment in the future, these will be more than enough to tackle the vast majority of jobs.
