Different Techniques To Measure Your Curtains

January 12, 2020

Beige Curtain

We all know how naked and bare windows affect us. Not only do they bring down the room, but they also bring us down. By keeping our windows bare we are not availing a big opportunity to design the interior of our houses. Keeping our windows bare also gives off a vacant look to the house and the room and doesn’t brighten up the place as it should. Beautiful curtains on your windows not only ensure privacy but also provide a filter for sunlight as well as bringing a sense of warmth and style to the entire room.

But before you start shopping for curtains and deciding the materials there is one thing that you have to do. And that is to find out the measurements of your curtains. It may seem like a simple enough task but there are a lot of details that you have to look into if you want your curtains to look perfect on your windows and add to the aesthetics of the room instead of bringing it down. There are a lot of companies that provide these services as if they were made to measure curtains and you can easily contact them to not only measure your curtains for you but also create tailored and customized window treatments for you and your windows.

Here we have put together a number of ways that you can size up your curtains and make sure that you get nothing but the very best for the windows in your house.

Choose a Location

The first thing that you have to do is to pick a spot where you want to hang your curtains. Whether you want it to be over a window, over an alcove, or somewhere else just to add to the style of the room, it will play an important part in the selection of the curtains. When you decide where to hang your curtains, you will be able to know a lot of different measurements of the curtains like their length, width, and more. You can then decide whether you want an outside mount or an inside mount.

Outside Mount

For an outside mount, you have to hang the curtains over and around your windows. If you want to have a stylish and chic look that beautifies your window and make them look larger than they are, you can do the following:

  • For a longer look, place the curtain rod at least 6 inches above the window.
  • Extend the rod 12 inches to either side of the window.

Inside Mount

If you want to opt for an inside mount, you have to hang the draperies inside the window opening. For an inside mount, you have to make sure that the rod is near the window frame. Make it as close as you can. Make sure that your curtains come inside the window. They don’t extend the window frame at all. Start your measurement from the top of the rod and bring it down to the floor.

Mounting Technique

Just like the hardware, the mounting will also depend upon whether you want an outside mounting or an inside mounting. Both these styles offer completely different aesthetics and it will depend on your mood as well as the theme of the room.

Outside Mount Curtains

Most of the curtains that you see around your house or someone else’s house will usually be hung in the outside mounting style. This is a favorite with a lot of people as the rod is fixed outside the window frame and that gives the entire window a larger look. It also provides complete privacy as well as filters natural light as much as you want. If you are going for a luxurious and stylish look then outside mounting is what you want to go for.

Inside Mount Curtains

Inside mount curtains are not as common as outside mount curtains. But you will see them every now and again. When we talk about inside mount curtains, it actually means that the curtain rod will be placed inside the window frame. It will give your window a modern look. Although inside mount curtains provide privacy and give a modern, chic, and minimalist look, they do not filter natural light as much as outside mount curtains.

Determine Rod Length

One of the things that you want to consider is the rod length. Make sure that if you are going for an outside mount then you should select a rod that extends six inches to either side of the window so that your curtains can fully cover the window. There are three different ways that you can install the rod. They are:

  • Inside Trim Mount
  • Below Trim Mount
  • Above Trim Mount

Measure for Width

When measuring for the width of the curtains, make sure that you add a few inches to either side of the curtain. Never take the exact measurement of the window as your final curtain width. This will mean that the curtain will never fully drape across your window and there will be slits on the side that will let the light in as well as giving a little view of the room from the outside. If you want to give a rich and luxurious look, then you should go for full curtains. Or, if you want to have a more tailored and modern look then opt for short curtains.

Measure for Length

You can select different lengths for your curtains depending on the look that you are going for. The length could be from the top of the rod to the bottom of the panel. It could also be from the top of the rod and come down to the floor. The third option is that your curtains start from the rod and come down to the floor and puddle a little bit. This is a traditional look.

CONCLUSION

Keep the above points in mind when you are measuring your curtains and you will end up with beautifully draped windows that will become the envy of your family and friends.
