How To Plan a Full Bathroom Remodel

July 16, 2020

Many people underestimate the importance of a beautiful bathroom. They don’t offer quite as big a bump up in home value as kitchens, after all, and so long as you have everything you need, there isn’t a lot you can do to the space to make it more functional.

Rather, bathroom remodels are almost entirely about how you feel in the space. Upgrade it the right way, and you might feel like you are enjoying a spa getaway, making the most of a bathtub to soak in or a shower to ease away the day’s worries. The bathroom is a critically important space to our health and wellbeing, so when you plan a remodel to improve its design, keep these steps in mind:

Collect Ideas

First, you are going to want to know what you want. Don’t go into a project assuming that the contractor is going to have all the ideas and a vision for the space. Though they may have an idea of what will look good, their opinions and yours may not even match up. It is far more responsible to go through and collect ideas based on these two categories:

Function

In all cases, you should prioritize function. The layout, additional features, and storage are all going to make a bigger impact on how much you enjoy your bathroom than how it looks. If you have mobility issues, for example, then you need seamless tubs, walk-in showers, or shelves that you can easily bring down to eye level.

Design

Just because you should prioritize function doesn’t mean design takes a backseat; it just means you should take care of the function ideas first. Why? Because every design idea can be adapted. Save ideas, take note of the materials you like, and do try to narrow these ideas down to one unified idea.

Ensure the Plumber is Quality

Contractors are essentially project managers. They may work on the site itself, but their primary purpose is to know who to hire for the different jobs that a bathroom remodel will require. If they don’t let you know who they hire, then don’t work with them.

A good way to get around this issue of subcontractors is to hire a specialist from the start. In the case of bathrooms, the most important feature to get right is the plumbing, so hire a company like Maplewood Plumbing, who have years of plumbing experience and can manage a remodeling job in your home. By working backward, you can ensure that the most important components to a bathroom remodel are well taken care of.

Have a Backup Bathroom

Finally, you are going to want to ensure that you have a backup bathroom during the remodel. If you have two or more full-piece bathrooms in your home, then all you need to do is have your contractors handle one room at a time. If you don’t, then you will need to work out a system with a friend, family member, or even a neighbor. In extreme situations, it may even be better to rent a room somewhere else for the duration of the project so you can stay comfortable until your new bathroom is ready to be revealed. Consider using brass angles as structural features to add some personality to your bathroom
