How to Polish Concrete Floors

June 13, 2022

If you have decided to get polished concrete floors for your home or a part of your house, the first step is to find a professional team to do the polishing task. While you may have heard about DIY approaches for this work, they will not be as professional as you think. A team of experienced workers can give the best polish and you won’t need to worry about precision. But before you hire a team, let’s know about the process first.

How to Polish Concrete?

The process of concrete polishing requires some steps. To complete the work professionals use the right tools, then grind concrete and follow more steps. Let’s have an overview of the concrete polishing steps.

The Right Tools

Right tools are required to begin the polishing work. Reputed companies conduct floor hardness tests to check which tool would be the best for it. Once the right tool is determined, the polishing starts by placing the tool on the grinder.

A special type of metal diamond tool is used to grind the concrete, and the size of the machine depends on the hardness of the surface.

Concrete Grinding

If repairs are needed, this is the best time to fix the issues. Once the repair is complete, the holes are filled and it will be leveled with the ground. If there are cracks to be fixed during the process of concrete polishing, experts use a special type of glue to fix the holes. Also, the concrete grinding depends on its hardness and softness of it. Based on that the machines and tools are used for polishing.

Apply Densifier and Stains

After grinding the concrete, professionals apply stains or polish guards; they mostly use two hundred grit resin to complete this step. A reliable company normally uses four-hundred grit sometimes. Staining and densifying is an important process, if not done with expert hands the floor can crack or get damaged easily. After removing a layer of concrete, the surface becomes soft and weak. Applying the densifier makes it hard again. After the stain dries out, experts apply the densifier to make it impenetrable. The densifier sits on the surface until it dries out. Sometimes experts use a double coat and leave it to dry for more than thirty minutes. However, the process is different with various companies.

Shaping the Concrete

To get Polished Concrete Floors, the densifier must dry out completely. Reputed companies use four hundred grit diamond pads to do the polishing work. It’s in this step, you will get to see the glossy floor. Once the four hundred grit process is complete, the team will finish the procedure using the rest of the resin.

The final step is optional. Depending on the requirement of the customer, reputed companies stop the grit process after 1,500 or it can go to 3,000. If you decide to continue till the 3,000 grit resin application, you will get a mirror-like finish on the floor. However, it will depend on your budget and decision to get a mirror-like floor.

Conclusion

Concrete polishing isn’t an easy task, and you will not get a professional job with a DIY approach. For that, you need to hire a team of professionals, who will complete the task with the right tools and within a short time.
