What You Need to Know Before Building Your Own Home

May 19, 2021

If you’re sold on the idea of building your own home from scratch, there’s no need to feel overwhelmed by the task in front of you, instead follow the step-by-step guide which is listed out below in order to get started. Especially if you want to build your next home within a reasonable budget.

What You Need to Know Before Building Your Own Home:

You’ll need to obtain a residential permit in order to start building:

You may be surprised to learn that you need to apply for a residential permit in order to start building on land that you’ve purchased. As though you may own a nice plot which you may want to build your dream home on, it’s illegal to build on your own land without getting a residential permit.

Make sure to research various building companies before settling on a builder:

Instead of settling on the first builder whose information you collect online, it’s a far wiser idea to spend a fair amount of time researching the pros and cons of all of the building companies in your area. For example, you can’t go wrong checking the Google reviews and Yelp reviews, for several options to ensure that you pick an option that features countless happy customers. The last thing that you want to do is to hire a building company or a builder to turn your home design into a reality, who will fall behind your schedule and may end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars which you haven’t budgeted for.

Make sure to hire a registered builder to build your new home:

It’s also a smart idea to hire a registered builder who has plenty of industry qualifications that you can trust. As you don’t want to hire a cowboy builder who has few accreditations to their name and shouldn’t be trusted to build your home.

Make sure that you have somewhere to say while your new home is still being built:

One consideration which you’ll have to make is where you’ll stay, while your new home is being built. Especially if you need to sell your current property in order to free up the capital which you’ll need to build your new home. As examples, you may want to stay with family members such as your parents, until your new home is built. Alternatively, if your budget allows you to stay in a rented home for the duration of your build, you may want to rent out a small home, while you’re busy working on your new home.

Hiring an architect can be an expensive task:

If you want to hire a well-known architect to design your new home, you have to put aside a large sum of money to pay for their wages. As great architects don’t come cheap!

So if you can’t wait to move into a brand new home, which you built from the ground up, it’s well worth referring to this handy information from time to time.
