3 Tips for Improving Your Dog’s Quality of Life

July 10, 2020

Having a dog is a gift – it’s something we shouldn’t take for granted because these creatures can bring so much joy into our lives that everything becomes better. They can make lonely people feel loved and they can make busy people take the time to slow down. They are ideal for children when it comes to having a loyal companion and someone to take responsibility for, and they can quickly become part of the family.

Pets don’t need a huge amount from you in order to live a happy life, but in order for them to have the best quality of life there are some things you will need to consider for them. Here are just some ideas.

Regular Vet Visits

Most of the time you won’t even think about visiting the veterinarian unless your dog is sick or injured. It’s great to have a clinic’s details to hand just in case something happens (and remember, although domesticated dogs are still essentially wild animals and no matter how well trained they will still potentially get into places they shouldn’t go and eat things they should not eat which can make them sick) and it can bring peace of mind.

What many people don’t consider, but is something that can offer your pet extra peace of mind, is that veterinarians are there for non-emergencies too. They are there so you can take your dog in for a regular (perhaps annual) checkup, even if there is nothing seemingly wrong with them. These regular checkups are an opportunity to check out your dog’s weight, teeth, eyesight, and general health. If there is a problem it can be caught early before it starts to destroy their quality of life, or even cause a premature death.

A Good Diet

Eating healthily is important for dogs as well as humans, and since dogs can so easily become seen as a member of the family, you need to take care of their diet just as you would everyone else’s. Pets can even have allergies to certain foods, and if this seems to be an issue, the veterinarian can determine exactly what the cause is.

When you are working out what to feed your dog, the best option is not to give them food meant for humans. This can be dangerous, even poisonous, to dogs, and there are many different pet foods that are specially formulated with your dog’s health in mind. It is these that should be used, and depending on your pet’s specific dietary needs, age, and even breed, you should be able to find the right type of food for them. You can supplement their food with treats, although this should be done in moderation. Hemp dog treats are a great way to give something extra to your dog that will also promote calmness and even reduce pain if they are hurt.

Exercise

Exercise might be the simplest way to improve your dog’s quality of life, and since it will improve yours too it is absolutely perfect for everyone involved. Taking your dog out for a walk once or twice a day (depending on the need) is excellent exercise, and it really will make a difference to the happiness and the overall health of your dog.

As well as walking, you can offer your dog toys to play with. This means they can always be occupied even if you are busy. Not only will this stimulate their brain, but it will keep their body healthy and stop them from chewing on furniture and shoes through boredom or by accident because they wanted to play with something.
