It can be an exciting time to move to a new home, but it can also be very difficult, particularly when it comes to affording it.
With these budgeting strategies that are easy to follow, you will be sure to spend a little less on your moving houses and reduce the tension along the way.
1. Declutter
Usually, a moving company can perform a free home survey to determine how much it will cost you to move. However, the final cost depends on how much stuff you’ve got so, get rid of any extra stuff you don’t need.
Why pay more to get things you don’t use or need moving? Decluttering is an absolute necessity before a move, and a cut-throat approach is required if you are looking to save money.
Try out the 6-month rule. If you haven’t used it in 6 months, then chuck it… or sell it, but whatever you do, don’t move with it.
2. Do it Yourself
Moving is exhausting enough without roping your reluctant friends to support you and still praying that they will still be sober enough to move your belongings without breaking something.
However, packing and unpacking your stuff by yourself will save you a lot of money. Of course, packing and unpacking may not be fun, but when you consider how much you will save from not paying the movers, it will not be too unpleasant eventually.
A bottle of wine and some music will make the work a lot less unpleasant.
3. Book ahead of time
When you book a moving company long in advance of your moving, you can save a few bucks in moving fees.
Teams for removals can be booked, especially during peak season such as summer or during bank holidays. Pre-booking means you can budget and let them know if there are any last-minute changes. You can get even better rates if you can move during the slower months, like January, or September, as children return to school.
4. Shop around
Moving house has a lot of costs, but some of these costs can be saved if you know what to do. For example, there’s utility costs, removal costs, estate agent fees, insurance costs, decorating costs and more.
By shopping around and looking for best deals, you can help to negate some of the costs that these things will set you back. Make sure to do some of this ahead of time, too, to ensure that you get the best deals and that you have them in place ready for moving.
5. Labels fragile stuff and valuables
To prevent your valuables from getting damaged, clearly write a sign on the package to show it holds things that are breakable. Where possible, mark with an arrow the way it will face up, so the movers don’t treat the carton the wrong way.
Additionally, make sure items of value are properly packed in the right packages packaged. You don’t want to save a few bucks on packages only to end up losing more when your valuables get damaged in transit.
Even if you don’t spend a lot moving, replacing the damaged items will definitely eat into your savings.
If you intend to move houses anytime soon, planning ahead of time will save you a lot of stress and expenses. Hopefully, the ideas covered in this article will give you a good place to start.
