Top 5 Things To Do When Visiting Maui

December 11, 2019

Going to Maui is the chance of a lifetime for most people. It is a vacation they save for and spend months planning. You want to get the most out of your trip, which might leave you looking at what to do in Maui. Here are five of the best things to consider when planning a trip to Maui.

  1. Hiking – Despite being an island, Maui has numerous hiking trails that will allow you to explore every inch of the island. You can hike up volcanoes and down into craters. Several parks have multiple trails to allow visitors and locals to explore, and the trails range from family-friendly to advanced only. Anytime you hike in Maui, and it is important to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. Too often, unprepared hikers end up in the emergency room with dehydration, sunstroke, or foot and ankle injuries.
  2. Snorkeling – If you have never been snorkeling before, some companies will teach you the basics, provide the equipment, and take you out in groups to explore the shallow waters around the island. Snorkeling is a popular activity due to the amazingly diverse sea life surrounding the island.
  3. Riding a Helicopter – Maui is a tropical island covered in rich vegetation, beautiful coasts, enormous volcanoes, and more. While you can see much of the beauty close up while hiking and driving the coast, you can’t appreciate everything there is to see from the ground. A helicopter tour will allow you to see everything there is to see.
  4. Attending a Luau – Hawaiin culture is unique and beautiful. The clothes, the flowers, the food, and the dancing create an experience like no other. When visiting Maui, making time to attend a luau is essential, and something you will not regret.
  5. Driving the coast – Being an island, you can drive the coast around the entire island to see all the views and different areas. The ocean around Maui is known for its crystal clear waters, marine life, and overall beauty. Simply driving the coast can bring a sense of clarity that you’ve never experienced before as you lose yourself in the majestic views.

Although Maui is part of the United States, you should think of it as visiting a foreign country in terms of food, water, plants, animals, and insects. You will be trying things and exposed to things that you never have before, so it is impossible to know ahead of time if you are going to have an adverse or allergic reaction to anything you come in contact with or eat.

Often when people visit Maui, they want to spend time laying in the sun and enjoying an alcoholic beverage. Unfortunately, that also leads to dehydration, sunstroke, and other unintended ailments. While a trip to the emergency room can put a damper on your vacation, not having proper insurance coverage can be a damper on your entire financial life. Medical bills can add up quickly and have been the cause of many people filing for bankruptcy. You can save yourself the incredible fear and frustration by making sure you have travel insurance.

Aside from having travel insurance, it is vital to prepare for activities. While trying new things can be exciting, trying them without any preparation can lead to disaster. Take safety precautions seriously when hiking, biking, snorkeling, or any other physical activity. If you get advice that an area is not safe or appropriate for your children, heed that warning to avoid your young one getting injured. Maui is a tropical island, bring water with you everywhere you go and drink water at every opportunity.
